Chilly weather is heralding winter's approach, with frost and snow likely for the south of New Zealand next week.

Meteorologists are stopping short of describing it as an Arctic blast, but say the cooler air coming from the South Pole will be widely felt, with temperatures plunging by 5 to 10 degrees Celsius.

Niwa meteorologist Ben Noll says there will be two blasts of cold weather - one early next week with another more aggressive one at the end of the week.

Noll says expect frost and some snow on the mountains.

A new online app was released today, designed by Youthline.

Called Good2Great, it helps young Kiwis build their self-confidence and leadership skills within a safe and anonymous environment.

The Good2Great programme is aiming to have 5,000 young people complete the online course in 2017. The programme will be supported by weekend workshops around the country, starting in Oamaru on May 20-21.

Good2Great ambassador Stan Walker will make a special appearance.

But after 40 years of service, one woman in the Clutha District has decided to take a step back from volunteering with her local.

Rabobank is predicting a farm-gate milk price around $6.25 a kilo for the 2017-18 season, well up from last season where it was 2 dollars less, at $4.25.

Global dairy prices are now better balanced than at the start of this season.

A bank report says this was likely to flow through and create largely stable commodity pricing in the new season.

However, Rabobank dairy analyst Emma Higgins says despite the improved market balance, the possibility of further lifts to the current season milk price is limited.

It is the type of racing which gave New Zealand rally Champion Hayden Paddon his taste for motorsport.

The road to Nugget Point has finally been tar sealed.

The project, which has many months to complete, was finally opened this week by Clutha District Mayor Bryan Cadogan and dignitaries.

A driver has been injured after a collision involving a truck and a car in South Otago this morning.

The crash happened at Milburn on the Waihola Highway, about 6 kilometres north of Milton, at around 8 am. The driver was trapped in their car and has moderate injuries.

The south-bound lane of the highway was reported blocked at 8.10am but was clear again just after 9.30am. There was is no further information at this stage, according to Police.

Repair work on the MacLennan Rd bridge in the Catlins has been delayed by almost a month.

The MacLennan Rd bridge connects the Papatowai Highway over the MacLennan River. It was closed in February and expected to open by Easter. It is now not expected to reopen until May 12.

In a letter sent to residents in the Papatowai area, the SouthRoads company took responsibility for the delay and says it has not achieved its expected productivity on the project.

A woman died and three other people were injured, one a 3-year-old girl, in a crash south of Waihola yesterday.

The crash between a small rental truck and a car happened on State Highway 1 between Milton and Waihola, south of Dunedin, about 3.20pm. The highway was closed for almost six hours after the crash.

Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter chief pilot Graeme Gale says he flew the 3-year-old girl to Dunedin Hospital. A St John spokesman says she had sustained moderate injuries.

The Clutha District Council will consider a rates increase for 2017-18 of about 2.4%.

Councillors will consider a draft annual plan outlining changes to forecast budgets. The draft annual plan will then be distributed for feedback from the public.

Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan says the proposed rates rise of about 2.4% is an average over the different areas in the district, where rates varied.

A report to councillors says rates increases will be offset by proceeds from forestry sales. The 2017-18 annual plan would take effect from July 1.
