Farm sales remain strong in Southland and Otago, with 25more farms sold in the past three months than this time last year.

Real Estate Institute of New Zealand data shows there were 47 farm sales in Otago for the three months ending February 2017, seventeen more than last year.

In Southland, there were 30 eight farm sales for the same period which was eight more than the corresponding time last year.

REINZ information shows an increase in the region of inquiries for sheep and beef properties.

The Commerce Commission has rejected the idea of Fairfax and NZME merging into one very large media organisation.

The decision has been welcomed by the E tū union.

E tū’s Senior Industrial Officer, Paul Tolich says the decision recognises there are more than commercial interests at stake.

He says the role of journalism is to hold to account the business interests and forces in our society, and believes the merger would have undermined that.

Tolich says is the only way we will make news media and journalism a viable business and occupation in New Zealand.

A French tourist is recovering in Dunedin Public Hospital following a shark attack in the Catlins yesterday.

She was flown to Dunedin in the rescue helicopter in the afternoon. One of the first on the scene was Catlins Surf owner-operator Nick Smart.

A young French woman has been flown to Dunedin Hospital after being attacked by a shark in the Catlins this afternoon.

Catlins Surf owner-operator Nick Smart said the woman was body-boarding when she received a moderate-sized bite from a shark about 2.10pm.

The Ministry for the Environment has just released a report in to the state of New Zealand's fresh water.

The "Our fresh water 2017 report" identifies more needs to be done to reduce phosphorus, nitrogen and E.coli entering the waterway, in both rural and urban settings.

New Zealand’s leading journal of arts and literature, Landfall has announced the winner of the inaugural Charles Brasch Young Writers’ Essay Competition.

New Zealand student Andy Xie, currently studying at the University of Columbia in the United States, takes the $500 prize with his essay ‘The Great New Zealand Myth'.

The award is named in honour of Dunedin poet and literary figure Charles Brasch, who founded Landfall in 1947, the new competition is an annual award open to New Zealand writers aged 16 to 21.
