Social media was a-wash with images of the Aurora Australis last night as many people in the south pointed phones and cameras at the heavens.

However star gazing was not always as easy to do, in the 18th century it was the domain of astronomers and nautical navigators.

Southroads will be in charge of road maintenance in the Clutha district for the first time in six years.

Three tenders were received by the Clutha District Council for the road maintenance contract, SouthRoads winning with a price of $17.5 million over three years.

SouthRoads Otago regional manager Dean Elder says SouthRoads is looking forward to working with the council and the community.

The residents of Holmdene rest home are happy at the news the Clutha District Council will fix cracked footpaths in Balclutha.

Last month, residents presented a petition to Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan asking to have fixed the cracked and potholed footpaths in Elizabeth and Charlotte Streets, near Holmdene.

The petition has more than two hundred signatures from residents, staff and friends or family of Holmdene.

Work is anticipated to start at the end of the week and be completed by mid-June.

Key findings of a just-released report from Otago Fish & Game, suggests South Otago streams still face major problems from sediment run-off caused by winter cropping practices.

Otago Fish & Game officials say sediment pollution damaged fish and other aquatic life have been a growing concern for a decade.

A major source of in-stream sediment is winter cropping practices such as strip grazing of stock with insufficient riparian buffers or on land that is too steep.

Fish & Game want the Otago Regional Council to ramp up its monitoring and compliance work.

It will be curtains for shopping bags in Balclutha in July.

The Clutha District Council has teamed up with Balclutha New World, Dunedin Curtain Bank and the Clutha Change Collective to provide free shopping bags in support of "Plastic-Free July".

Otago was experienced the second strongest growth in rural property sales in the nation for the three months ended April.

Data released Real Estate Institute of NZ shows there were 66 more farm sales, up 16.2%, for the three months ended April 2017 compared with the same period last year.

10 regions recorded increases in sales volume; Waikato recorded the largest with 29 more sales, followed by Otago with 17 more sales..

Across the country there were 473 farm sales in the three months ended April this year.

Members of the Balclutha volunteer fire brigade were sent to fight a small bush fire on a section in town today.

A fire communications spokesperson says the garden rubbish fire happened on a section in Newarp St.
