South Otago Police are investigating burglaries at several businesses in the Milton area which have happened in the past few weeks.
Five burglaries have been reported to Police so far, and all have occurred in the early hours of the morning.
The burglars appear to have taken cigarettes, tools, cash and alcohol.
Police are following positive lines of enquiry, and patrols in the area have been increased.
The Midway Dairy in Milton has been broken into for the second time in three weeks.
The owners discovered the break-in at the Union St store on Friday morning.
A police spokeswoman says the owners found someone had tried to gain entry to the store and caused a pipe to burst.
The wall was damaged and pipes were leaking when the break-in was discovered.
Southland Police are investigating the recent stabbing of an elderly man in Mataura.
The victim, in his 70s, remains in a stable condition in Southland Hospital, after being stabbed at his flat following the offender demanding money from him.
Police are continuing to appeal for information on anything noticed by people who were near Main St, Mataura on Saturday night.
The offender is described as unshaven, approximately 5 foot 10 in height, and wearing a grey hoodie and dark pants.
A proposed camping ground development at Beaumont is set to begin in the coming weeks, now that the summer holiday period has ended.
Beaumont Hotel owner Alison Mills announced plans to expand the camping and holiday park at the start of the year.
The first stage of the five-year plan is to build new cabins on the 1 hectare site behind the hotel.
The new cabins will add to existing cabins to form a 70-lot campground as well as amenities and ablution blocks.
Balclutha Primary School's principal is concerned the cost of fixing its uneven and cracked concrete grounds is too high for the school to manage on its own.
School principal Paddy Ford noticed the heavy slabs of concrete at the school were becoming increasingly cracked and uneven.
The Lawrence Tuapeka Community Board has approved a request to install a public drinking fountain in Ross Pl.
Of three options presented, the approved design includes a water bottle filling station and dog bowl in addition to the standard drinking fountain.
The board was impressed with the way it incorporates a gold pan for the bowl, which fits in with the town's historic ties to gold mining.
The cost of the fountain is estimated to be $3595, with about $1500 for installation.

Police say a fire in Kaitangata yesterday morning is no longer being treated as suspicious, after initial reports suggested it might be.
The Fire Service was alerted to a shed fire in Salcombe St in the early hours of Monday morning, and arrived to find the shed well ablaze. The fire was brought under control by around 3.30am.
The blaze was initially thought suspicious, as there was no clear cause at the time. Police now believe it started from hot ashes disposed of in an ash bucket in the shed.
