The owner has engaged a salvage diver from Dunedin to prevent any further fuel leaking.

The Otago Regional Council has adjusted its plan to spend up to $50,000 importing a new rabbit killing virus.

At today's regulatory committee meeting, some councillors considered the proposal,which was released in a report earlier this week, had significant flaws. The amendment ultimately did not pass council

Police are warning those travelling through North Canterbury over Waitangi weekend to take care.

Highways in the area have become increasingly busy since the Kaikoura earthquake closed part of State Highway One, making the Lewis Pass the key route to the West Coast and Picton. Police are advising people on roads leading to the pass to allow extra time for their journey because of the congestion on State Highways 7 and 63.

The weather bomb that was predicted to hit the south arrived with gale force winds mid morning.

Flights were delayed, trees have been up-rooted, and power was cut to many areas across the southern region.

The effects of the 'weather bomb' have mainly been felt on the east coast.

The Otago Regional Council is asking for help from boaties to prevent the spread of Didymo, or rock snot.

With summer upon us, holidaymakers are being asked to look after the southern region’s waterways by checking, cleaning and drying equipment after use in water.

The Check, Clean, Dry message comes from the Ministry for Primary Industries as part of efforts to restrict the spread of didymo.

ORC spokesperson Scott MacLean says keeping our waterways pristine is everyone's responsibility.

Almost 3,000 submissions have been received on a proposal for marine-protected areas along the South-East Coast.

The South-East Marine Protection Forum’s proposal sought suggestions of sites for possible inclusion in a network of protected areas from Timaru to Waipapa Point in Southland.

Forum Chair, Maree Baker-Galloway, says she wasn't surprised at the high number of submissions.

An independent analyst has been engaged to provide a summary of the submissions.

The content will then be considered in the Forum’s next round of deliberations, and will be influential in shaping the recommendations made to government.

Oamaru's Christmas in the Park has had its biggest turn-out since the event began in 2010.

Takaro Park filled up with more than 2000 people enjoying a day of fun and games.

The event was designed to be a place where families felt no pressure or stress and could spend time with their families, making memories.

Organisers say it was important to keep the event free.

Bottled water was the only cost, with the money raised from that going towards next year's Christmas in the Park.

The children of Weston School in Oamaru were treated to a surprise visitor this week.

A big jolly man in a red suit was delivered by helicopter to the school grounds and there was a wave of excitement amongst the children.

It was of course Santa Claus and he had a special message for everyone.

Thanks to health and safety regulations a much loved piece of North Otago playground equipment will be laid to rest.

The slide at Papakaio School has been in place for 41 years.

The school's board has decided to sell it as it no longer complies with health and safety legislation. Problems with the slide include its height, steepness, lack of sides and a sharp change of angle at the bottom.

The school is selling it in an online auction. It's expected to be removed from the school grounds by mid-January.

An Oamaru goat has been tasered.

Senior Constable Carl Pedersen used the device in an unusual way yesterday, after being led on a wild goat chase through the town.

The goat was believed, at one stage, to be a danger to traffic on State Highway 1 and it also damaged a woman's mobility scooter.

Senior Constable Pedersen confronted the goat and tasered it. The goat was later put down.

An Oamaru man who caused a fatal five-car smash, was a learner driver and had smoked cannabis before getting behind the wheel.

Warrick Delaney Taylor appeared in the Dunedin District Court and pleaded guilty to five counts of careless driving causing injury and one of careless driving causing death.

Stuart Windle, of Kaikoura, died at the scene of the crash north of Dunedin while he was heading south to take part in the Hurricane Rodders Mid Winter Run in the city.

Southern Police and emergencies services are at the scene of a fatal crash on Hampden-Palmerston Road, near the turn off to the Moeraki Boulders.

Police were called shortly after 3.30 pm to the crash involving four cars.

One person has died at the scene, and another has critical injuries.

Police say the Serious Crash Unit has been notified, and will be investigating.

The road is currently down to one lane.

Oamaru’s North Otago Recreational Turf Trust is the major beneficiary of a funding round.

The Otago Community Trust has approved a $95,000 donation to the Turf Trust.

The money will be put towards the cost of replacing the recreational hockey turf at Oamaru's Centennial Park.

Turf Trust chairman Ray Simpson says the current water-based turf was originally laid in 1999, and is no longer able to be repaired.

Simpson says hockey water turfs typically last a decade, but they managed to make their old one survive 17 years.

The Oamaru airport runway was home to 90 cars and motorbikes at the weekend, all going as fast they could over a 1/4 of a mile.

The Whitestone Rodders organise the drag racing event twice a year and anyone can take part.

There was a slight head wind but that didn't seem to slow anyone down.
