Rabobank is predicting a farm-gate milk price around $6.25 a kilo for the 2017-18 season, well up from last season where it was 2 dollars less, at $4.25.

Global dairy prices are now better balanced than at the start of this season.

A bank report says this was likely to flow through and create largely stable commodity pricing in the new season.

However, Rabobank dairy analyst Emma Higgins says despite the improved market balance, the possibility of further lifts to the current season milk price is limited.

The deadline has passed for Herbert man Wayne Richardson to significantly reduce his flock of wandering birds.

The former farmer is being pressured by Waitaki District Council to reduce the risk of the animals posing a hazard to motorists on State Highway 1.

An Oamaru man has been sentenced to nine months' home detention, and 300 hours' community work following a brutal assault on his twin sister.

Aaron Mark Macahan appeared in the Dunedin District Court after admitting a charge of injuring his sister Lacey with intent to injure her.

The pair were celebrating their 22nd birthday, in Oamaru on August 6, when tempers flared. Lacey Macahan allegedly slapped Aaron's face in a bid to bring him to his senses, but it had the opposite effect.

During a fight in the back seat of the car Macahan repeatedly punched his sister, and then tried to strangle her after she lost consciousness.

A fundraising event for Weston Playcentre took place at Oamaru Racecourse over the weekend.

The fundraiser let people take sneak peaks into many different types of vehicles and even for some children the chance to operate a digger.

A historical quilt has travelled all the way from France back to its home in Oamaru.

The quilt was made 100 years ago during WW1 and is just one of the many quilts made at that time called "signature quilts".

The biggest ticket item on the Waitaki District Council’s wish-list of new projects in the coming year is a $400,000 link road in the North Oamaru Business Park.

Waitaki-Mayor Gary Kircher says the long-term view for the park had always been to create a link road allowing full access between Kororo Rd and TY Duncan Rd.

Estimated costs for the Waitaki District Council's cultural facility development project have increased by 33%.

However project chairman Councillor Hugh Perkins says the increase will not affect ratepayers.

The now $6 million amalgamation of the Forrester Gallery, North Otago Museum and Waitaki District Archive will require the council to up its ante. Perkins says the extra funds will come from depreciation reserves set aside for the Forrester Gallery.

Jazz notes of all varieties echoed through historic Oamaru at the weekend.

The Harbour Street Jazz & Blues Festival was held over eight venues, more than in previous years. Acts came from as far afield as Auckland, with trumpet player Edwina Thorne, and four piece ensemble Freaky Meat.

Westport woman Leanne Ryall left her Domett St home Friday morning and hasn't been seen since.

50 year old Ryall is described as five foot, three inches tall, of solid build, with short, wavy, red/brown hair.

She was last seen around 9am on Friday morning walking near the intersection of Derby and Cobden Street, a few blocks from her Domett St home.

Police believe Ryall is still in the Westport area but are not ruling out the possibility that she has travelled further afield.

Hundreds of horse riders converged on host-town Omakau for a grand cavalcade at Omakau Racecourse on Saturday.

Nearly 500 people on nine trails took part in this year's 25th anniversary cavalcade. The Cavalcade Founder Fleur Sullivan says she never imagined the event would grow to the size it has.

The North Otago A & P showgrounds in Oamaru will be heaving with people, animals, machinery and of course baking and preserves this weekend at its annual display of rural life.

Parents were busy dropping off lovingly made baking this morning to the showgrounds ready for judging ahead of a busy schedule. The A & P show is one of the most important events on the farming calendar and gathers people from all over North Otago

The Waitaki District Council voted to begin trials of keeping cars off of Harbour St on weekends at its February 15 meeting.

To celebrate some of the town's colourful characters are planning a party. Oamaru artist, and Harbour St tenant, Donna Demente says the trial Harbour St pedestrianisation is a positive move for the town.

After being stuck on rocks for four days, the Oamaru fishing vessel Jane Marie has been lifted clear and the salvage and pollution response is over.

The Jane Marie ran into trouble on February the 9th while entering Oamaru Harbour, with two crew on board.

A Maritime New Zealand spokesperson says both sailors ended up in the water, and were rescued and treated at Oamaru hospital.
