Federated Farmers research shows the southern region's rural sector is being hurt by large rates increases.

Rates have increased by 77% over the last decade across 54 districts.

Federated Farmers local government spokesperson Katie Milne says they're reflecting on a tough period for the sector.

The organisation says farmers are struggling with the rates burden, and council bills can be a significant part of their farm costs.

Milne says land and improvement values can have little or no bearing on the property owners’ consumption of council services in relation to others.

She says farm incomes have taken a severe buffeting this year, especially in the dairy sector.
