The Black Caps have claimed victory in their first test against Sri Lanka, winning by 122 runs.

The five-day test at University Oval began on Thursday with Sri Lanka electing to bowl after winning the toss.

It took the Black Caps less than three and a half hours to wrap up the fourth innings, dismissing Sri Lanka for 282.

The opposing side needed 404 to win.

Tim Southee was New Zealand's best bowler today, taking three wickets.

The teams will head to Hamilton for their next test, starting on Friday.
