5% rate rise for ratepayers

After just a few days of deliberating, the Dunedin City Council have come up with a 5% rate rise for local ratepayers.

9 Local News spoke to Mayor, Dave Cull, about finishing the week on target, and plans to drop rates to a lower level in the future.

Stadium debt sparks fiery exchanges at the DCC

Debate was heated at times during the first session of the council's budget meetings this morning, with stadium debt sparking fiery exchanges.

The end result saw Council decide to temporarily double the time to repay debt related to the stadium.

DCC discuss discretionary items for the Draft Annual Plan

The Dunedin City Council spent the day discussing discretionary items which are now going to be included in the Draft Annual Plan for public consultation.

Councillor Jinty McTavish says the proposals which have been recommended for Council funding include:

Ocean Beach Erosion, a Maori Consultation Model, the Caversham Tunnel, the St. Clair sea wall and steps, an energy plan, stage one of the strategic cycle network, and funding for the Blueskin Bay Library.

McTavish says there are 34 other items listed in the plan which remain unfunded in current draft stages.

The Dunedin City Council have begun to discuss the projected budgets for this year and the next decade to come.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull says, to keep rates from rising above 5%, Council need to find savings of $8m

DCC budget proposal

Next week the Dunedin City Council will be meeting to discuss budget proposals for the 2012-2013 Annual Plan.

Mayor Dave Cull says it's not just the stadium which has created current Council debt, but a number of other issues, as well.

The Dunedin City Council experienced a partial telephone system failure today.

A hardware component fault was located in the system, which blocked calls both to and from the DCC’s general enquiries number for a period of just over two hours.

Network Services Manager, Tim Oaks, says as the telephone system has a back-up, they only experienced a partial failure.

Calls to other DCC sites such as Moana Pool, the Dunedin Public Library and the i-SITE Dunedin Visitor Centre were unaffected.

South Dunedin upgrade

A revamp of South Dunedin began earlier this year with shop frontages being painted along King Edward Street.

The next phase of the project is due to start next year, after the council receives feedback on the living document it has posted online.

Occupy Dunedin protesters leave the Octagon in defeat

Occupy Dunedin protesters are no longer camping out in the Octagon, taking down their tents today.

The local protest began in an effort to show solidarity with the international Occupy Wall Street movement in America, and had occupied the main centre of the city since the 15th of October, a total of 66 days.

Upon hearing news that the occupiers have moved on, Dunedin Mayor, Dave Cull, said "better late than never".

Mediation of Saddle Hill heads to Environment Court

Mediation between owners of the Saddle Hill quarry and the Dunedin City Council has failed, with the DCC now heading to the Environment Court.

Mayor Dave Cull says the court process is necessary as there is no current legal declaration of the rights of the land owners.

Dunedin rate payers cover the cost of Occupiers attempted to dig vegetable patch

The repair work on the grass in the upper-Octagon has been completed following damage believed to be caused by the Occupy Dunedin protest group.

New turf had to be laid after the grass became damaged as a result of the Occupation.

It's understood the Occupiers attempted to dig a bed for vegetables in the lawn, causing damage to the sand-carpet beneath the topsoil.

Repair work came at a cost of $3,500
