Local museum calls for greater sports appreciation

There's no doubt New Zealanders love sport, but questions are being raised about the extent of national recognition for sporting achievements.

The staff of a Dunedin museum are calling for greater sports appreciation throughout the country.

And with Dunedin home to the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame, the city's poised to play a crucial part.

The consumers price index has fallen in the last quarter, following three consecutive quarterly rises.

But the downfall is only slight, at 0.2%, and is typical of the December quarter.

Lower prices for petrol and vegetables were major influencing factors, although they were countered by increased travel and housing costs.

Overall petrol prices were down 5.7% - the largest decrease of all.

And if it hadn't been for the decline in fuel costs, the consumers price index would have risen slightly in the December quarter.

The Black Caps are in town ahead of Dunedin's doubleheader one day internationals against Sri Lanka.

The boys are focused on victory, for an unbeatable series lead at the University Oval, after their four-wicket win in Nelson.

But one player is already out with injury, and with the world cup looming, the side can't afford anymore mishaps.

As the nation gears up to host the Cricket World Cup, organisers of another big tournament hope to capitalise on the hype.

And they've turned their attention to Dunedin, where parts of the crowded sports calendar will play out.

Business confidence is at an all-time high throughout the country, despite somewhat lacklustre profits.

That's revealed in the latest quarterly survey of business opinion by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research.

It shows the economy is not as strong as people think it is.

There is growth in the economy, but it's small compared to growth in business optimism.

Many businesses report strong intentions to hire more staff, and there's increased residential building activity forecast.

A strong year for the local tourism sector is reflected in the latest commercial accommodation statistics.

Dunedin's total guest nights are up around 10%.

That's significantly higher than the national trend, which is also favourable.

Dunedin's being visited by more New Zealanders, as well as more overseas tourists.

The commercial accommodation data doesn't include cruise ships, which are also bringing an increasing number of passengers to Dunedin.

Countries compete in under-20 ice hockey championship

The world under-20 ice hockey championship is under way in Dunedin.

Teams from five countries are competing for the title, with New Zealand keen to recreate its win from seven years ago in Serbia.

And while the title is important, organisers say they're happy just to see the sport gain momentum locally.

A major reform of the coronial system is about to go through parliament, thanks to recommendations by local researchers.

Food prices have remained relatively static over the last year, up just 1%.

Prices for meat, poultry and fish have risen, but that's been offset by cheaper bread, cheese and butter.

The cost of beef has increased the most - up almost 10%.

Overall it's proving to be a good month for household budgets, with reasonable food prices and much cheaper fuel.

Petrol and diesel are both expected to get cheaper still, providing relief for households dealing with the financial aftermath of Christmas.
