Mystery surrounds the source of a water leak coming from an area of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail a rate of 4 litres per minute.
The water is running down a bank, above the track, off Old Bridge Rd, in Alexandra.
Central Otago Clutha Trails co-director Barrie Wills says the water has been running above and alongside the track since last July.
It is not known exactly where it is coming from.
The Central Otago District Council arranged contractors to check the pipes on Old Bridge Rd and O'Neill Cr for leaks.
Council Infrastructure services executive manager Julie Muir says three water leaks on the council water supply pipes were discovered and repaired in July and a private property owner was also advised of a leak on their property.
Preliminary findings point towards ground water in the area, possibly from a spring.
Old Bridge Rd resident Russell Butt estimates there are about four houses on the bank which could be compromised is the problem isn't dealt with.
