One person has died after a serious crash between a truck and car in Invercargill on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened just before 1pm at the intersection of Dee and Avenal Sts.

Shortly after the crash police confirmed one person died as a result of their injuries.

A witness told the Otago Daily Times the truck was turning into Avenal St while the car was pulling out when the vehicles collided.

The road was closed following the crash but has since reopened.
