One man is dead and two injured following a single car crash near Alexandra.

Police and emergency services attended a single-car crash on Coates Road, near the Airport just prior to midnight.

Three men were in a vehicle that smashed into a tree.

One passenger had only moderate injuries and raised the alarm while the other two remained trapped in the wreckage.

One of the trapped men was taken to Dunedin Hospital via helicopter with serious injuries, but the other man died at the scene.
