Two of the country's largest unions have merged under a new name.

The newly formed union is called E tu, which means 'stand tall' in Maori.

It's the amalgamation of the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union and the Service and Food Workers Union.

Together they have about 50,000 members, who were asked to vote on the merger.

The change has been three years in the making.
