Oamaru's observatory is scanning the night skies again after five years of being out of use.

The Stoke Street observatory dates back to 1986 and has had trouble in recent years getting enough members to keep it going.

In a bid to return salmon to their sacred river members of a First Nation tribe visited the Hakataramea hatchery where the Chinook salmon were first introduced to New Zealand rivers.

Winnemem Wintu hereditary chief and spiritual leader Caleen Sisk was in South Canterbury to learn the history of the Mchenrys Road hatchery where American Salmon were released in the McCloud River in 1901.

A unique collection 6000 rare books has been bequeathed to Oamaru by a United States book collector.

The collection includes books on Antarctic exploration as well as rare mountaineering journals.

The 1883 Thames St courthouse in Oamaru has been under wraps since the beginning of March when the Waitaki District Council's $900,000 earthquake strengthening work programme began.

The work will allow court services to return to the landmark building in the town's main street.
