The Southern District Health Board did not go ahead with a recommendation to issue helmets to mental health staff.

Yesterday, the Otago Daily Times reported the board issued helmets after two assaults in which nurses were punched in the head area.

The information was in a written response to an Official Information Act request.

However, mental health nursing director Heather Casey says the helmets were a recommendation only.

She says it was discussed at a clinical level around one particular patient and a decision was made that helmets were not required as the acute situation had resolved.

Ardern's second in charge is Northland's Kelvin Davis, who was also elected unopposed at the party's caucus meeting.

Dunedin North MP David Clark says he respects Andrew Little's decision to put the party interests ahead of his own, and is looking forward to supporting his 'friend Jacinda' as they campaign on the issues concerning people in the South and across New Zealand.'

Ice was a serious issue for Otago motorists over the weekend.

With clear skies forecast for the much of the week, motorists on inland roads should look out for icy conditions.

As always, winter driving conditions means care needs to be taken on roads.

This is especially true in places that can remain frosty all day, such shaded areas and approaches to bridges.
