Queenstown's youngsters have an extra attraction for the school holidays...

The resort now boasts a newly upgraded playground at Queenstown Bay.

Work on the playground began in June and was officially opened by Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult this afternoon.

The playground cost almost a million dollars, and as soon as the construction fences were lowered a hoarde of kids came in.

It was initially announced last August and included a one hundred thousand dollar grant from the Central Lakes Trust.

Boult says when the project first came to the council table he was a little concerned about spending that amount of money on a playground.

But he says now he sees the joy it brings and the added benefit to the downtown area.

Boult says it's a great way to kick off the new masterplanning work around renewing CBD Queenstown.
