The Department of Conservation says a 5 metre Gray's Beaked Whale, that was found on a Greymouth beach, had its beak removed with a chainsaw, possibly on Saturday.
It is an offence to take a whalebone or any part of a marine mammal without a permit.
DOC ranger Glen Newton also warned rotting whales could carry diseases that contaminated skin and clothing.
Anyone who has information about the removal of the whale’s beak, including who might be responsible, was asked to call the Department of Conservation.
