A group of highly respected astronomers from across the globe have converged on Canterbury for a series of events.

The animals were invited and they came - in cages, on leads and clasped firmly in arms.

Fourteen dogs, one cat, a guinea pig, a hen and an alpaca attended the annual blessing of the animals at Saint Mary's Church in Timaru over the weekend.

Hospice South Canterbury received an unexpected gift of cash from a seven-year old boy this week.

Carter Brown of Timaru has been busy raising funds by chopping firewood, resulting in a donation to the local hospice of over $500.

It was a chaos of children, costumes and song in Timaru recently, as preschoolers from across South Canterbury performed at a kapa haka festival.

The preschoolers descended on Timaru's Caroline Bay Hall for the Korohi O Te Pepi, also known as the Singing of the Babies kapa haka festival.

There were eighteen preschools from across South Canterbury taking part.

They performed waiata, dance, haka and poi.

The sound of music is set to once again ring out from Saint Mary's Anglican Church in Timaru.

The historic Church Street building has been closed for earthquake-strengthening work since January and will reopen in time for the annual Battle of Britain commemorative service this Sunday.

Two teaching disciplines have joined forces at a South Canterbury High School to provide an artistic and acrobatic special event.

Junior school pupils blended dance skills with juggling and more, to present a show for their peers.

Timaru has celebrated 150 years since the first meeting of the Timaru Borough Council by lighting up the winter night with an impressive light show.

The Impressive light display lit up the facade of the council building in a rainbow of colours.

As evening fell, a sizeable crowd grew in central Timaru to help celebrate a century and a half of history.

Images of the Timaru district's history were projected onto the building in King George Place.

The Alpine Energy Timaru Brass Band is also celebrating its 150th anniversary, and provided the evening's soundtrack.

Police have arrested twelve protesters demonstrating against a large dairy farm development in the Mackenzie Country.

The protesters had been asked to leave the property but had refused.

A pair of Clydesdale's have stolen the show at this year's annual ploughing match in South Canterbury.

The event's organised by the Geraldine Vintage Car and Machinery Club, and while there were plenty of iron horses on show, two teams turned up with the real deal.
