Female athletes from around the region are proving they're just as strong as their male counterparts.

More than a dozen women demonstrated their mettle for an inaugural strength competition held in Kaikorai Valley.

And organisers are hoping to break down some societal stereotypes.

A local woman has been selected for a high performance squad of the country's top weightlifters.

Amanda Gould is one of 10 women in the training team, chosen by Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand.

She and the other athletes are working towards participation in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Gould works for the Highlanders and has competed overseas, representing New Zealand in last year's Pacific Games and Oceania championships.

The 29-year-old has qualified for this year's Oceania competition, to be held in Fiji in May, but is awaiting final team selection.

It's been a difficult pre-season for the Highlanders, with last year's winning team yet to record a victory.

The Super Rugby side is preparing to play the New South Wales Waratahs in Queenstown this Friday.

That'll be the Highlanders' third and final pre-season game and players are hoping to finish triumphant.

They lost to French team Racing 92 in Hong Kong, and drew against the Crusaders in Southland last week.

The reigning champions are set to formally start their Super Rugby campaign at the end of the month, when they'll face the Blues in Auckland.

Dunedin's a finalist in national awards aimed at recognising people's favourite places to cycle.

There are four categories and Dunedin's in line to win the on-road section.

The city surrounds, including Otago Peninsula, is up against four other spots including Christchurch's Port Hills.

Kiwis are being asked to vote for their favourite cycling locations online throughout February, which is Bike Wise Month.

The awards are run each year by the New Zealand Transport Agency, with winners due to be announced on the 3rd of March.
