The Harris Mountains are set to be made more accessible to outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to a proposed new ski-touring route.
Skiers travelling the sixty kilometre winter-time traverse between Coronet Peak and Treble Cone skifields, will also be able to find shelter with the addition of five new alpine huts.
Arrowtown adventurer Eric Bradshaw is currently constructing the huts, which he's designed using a plastic water tank for the outer shell.

Staying in Queenstown, around two hundred and fifty residents are set to receive a Christmas boost tomorrow afternoon, thanks to the generosity of the resort community.
Around thirty volunteers have been busy collecting donations, and nominations, for this year's Baskets of Blessings project.

About a hundred mourners have gathered on the shores of Lake Wakatipu to pay tribute to slain English tourist Grace Millane.
People brought flowers, candles and pictures of Miss Millane to the vigil, organised by Queenstown woman Amanda Morris.

Queenstown's mayor has hit out at the New Zealand Transport Agency over Queenstown's traffic woes, saying he is frustrated by the slow pace of progress.
He has also hinted at new infrastructure, including a dedicated cycling and walking bridge across the Shotover River and a new roundabout at Lake Hayes Estate.

Fine weather brought out a big crowd for the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club's annual Season of Shred event in Fernhill on Saturday.
And with something for all ages on offer, the Shred is proving to be a popular event on the local calendar.

They sat at tables stretching along Buckingham Street, enjoying food from over a dozen of the township's restaurants.

A new water fountain's been installed at Arrowtown Skate Park after schoolchildren campaigned to clean up their village.
Year five and six pupils from Arrowtown School wrote to Queenstown's mayor Jim Boult last year calling for a raft of changes to the park, including a water fountain.

A ski shop owner has been given a priceless collection of relics chronicling the history of commercial skiing in the Wakatipu Basin.
Kris Vermier, co-owner of Browns Ski Shop and treasurer of the Wakatipu Ski Club, was left the large box of items by a mystery woman towards the end of the winter season.

Most snow bunnies keen on getting back on the slopes in December would normally need to head to the northern hemisphere to do so... but not this year.
For the first time, Cardrona was open for skiing in summer over the weekend.
Cardrona general manager Bridget Legnavsky says it was super cool to be open on the first day of summer, at a time when they'd expected to be open for mountain biking and karting instead.
People enjoyed the chance to learn to ski and snowboard, while others were able to enjoy some rails and boxes in the terrain park.

Central Otago has raised its glass to a one and a half million dollar investment in Cromwell's polytechnic, and there's more good news on the way.
No sooner had the new trades and craft brewery building at Central Campus been officially opened, plans for further expansion were also announced.
