Road and electricity crews have been busy in the Roxburgh and Millers Flat area repairing damage done by torrential rain and floods on Sunday.

Power has been restored to nearly all houses affected in the northern part of Roxburgh with the remaining five being supplied by a temporary generator.

She still drives to her daily errands, and attributes her long life to a sherry every day.

Firefighters are battling a large scrub fire on a hillside in Alexandra. The fire is on the west of Alexandra near Aronui Road and Kamaka Crescent.

Forest and Bird have named the Kea as New Zealand’s Bird of the Year for 2017.

The competition attracted a record 50,000 votes, up from 20,000 last year.

This last weekend the Central Otago township of Clyde celebrated the birthday of the man whom the town is named after.

Lord Clyde was born in Scotland 225 years ago and the town dressed up this weekend in his honour.

The Otago Regional Council is looking for new blood to take over from departing chief executive Peter Bodeker.

Bodeker is near the end of his five-year-term, but ORC chairman Steven Woodhead says the next appointee should come from outside of the organisation.

Unions are pleased with the decision made by New Zealand First and its leader Winston Peters last night.

Just before 7pm Peters announced New Zealand First would go into a coalition with the New Zealand Labour Party.

This afternoon Jacinda Ardern announced which MPs will have cabinet positions, David Clark and Clare Curran are among the names.
